We will be starting Year 4 later this fall, and I'm trying to wrap my head around the study guides for both MHLW and Plutarch.
Do you have your student read through the Introduction AND Vocabulary before the Reading? Or just look up vocabulary as needed (that seems like it would break up the flow of reading, but for me, reading the definitions before the passage isn't very helpful because they're out of context and I often forget the definition by the time I get to them in the passage.) Or is this something that I can let my child decide what works best for him?
Also, are the sections labeled "Part One," "Part Two," etc. meant to break up the passage for narration/discussion purposes?
And, does anyone just hand this over to read independently and then discuss and look at pictures together later in the day? I'm trying to look for more readings that my child can do independently in Year 4. (I would probably do the first two or three weeks reading together, and then let him do the readings independently from there.) His reading level is high enough that he would be fine, as long as he's had a chance to "get into" the reading a little.

One thing that might help for independent reading without distractions is to download the text-only versions and print them out for the student's use.
The section markers can be used to break up readings for narration, or for those who want to spread readings over more than one day.
The vocabulary: use as little of it as you think you need to. You might look over the lists and pre-teach a few words that you think might cause difficulty. You can use narration breaks to clear up any word confusion from that section.
Charlotte Mason suggested writing important proper nouns like names and places on the blackboard ahead of time, as a narration help.
