Stephanie in AR Wrote::) posted, deleted cookies, had to log in again - I think that's the problem, not keeping the cookies but deleting the "you are logged in" cookie.

Yes, if you are auto-deleting cookies every 30 minutes, then you are logging yourself out. You need the login cookie for the site to know you are logged in.
