  Lost a Forum??
Posted by: suzukimom - 08-03-2012, 06:26 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (7)

I had posted a couple of things to "Parents with Health Challenges Forum"... which I think was under Family Dynamics....

Now I see it is a Special group.... I see it listed on my userCP page under group memberships....

If I try to join it, it says I can't join a group that I already belong to.

BUT - I don't see it listed among my forums at all... even where the other Special Groups to which I belong are listed....

help?

  Files?
Posted by: HomesteadMommy - 08-03-2012, 02:19 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (5)

I wasn't sure if this was the right place to post this or not... But I was wondering what is going to be done with the huge number of files spread over the AO groups? Are they going to be copied or moved over here? Maybe setup as attachments in the sub forum they pertain to? Or left in the AO groups?

  Testing the "Like" button
Posted by: Phyllis - 08-02-2012, 08:40 PM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (14)

What do you think? Click "Like" if you like this! :)

It seems to be working. I'll just need to change the color. I'll make it smaller, too.

  Is a like button possible?
Posted by: LoneStarAcademy - 08-02-2012, 01:47 PM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (22)

I know, I know, I have been tainted by facebookbook. Grrrrr. The reality, however, is that it is a reinforcing time saver. If I agree with someone's comment I don't have to create a reply, but rather hit a like button. Then only if I have something different to add do I actually have to reply.

Anyway, wasn't sure if it were an available add-on or not but wanted to suggest it.

  Suggesting a new sub-forum
Posted by: suzukimom - 08-02-2012, 07:50 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (27)

Not sure how much interest there would be - but maybe there could be a sub-forum under Family Dynamics for "older parents"?

Phyllis, is there any way to add the ability to mark a batch of New threads 'read' when they come up after clicking on 'new posts'?

Can I insert a photo from my computer into a post? And how would I go about doing that? The little icon up there that says Insert Image only allows you to put in a remote URL

  TIP: The green arrow
Posted by: Phyllis - 08-01-2012, 11:04 PM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (1)

I'm going to try to post little tips here regularly. This first one is really basic, but I myself didn't notice it right away, so I figure it's worth pointing out.

Have you seen this little green arrow?

It means there's a new post in that thread, and here's the important part: if you click on one of those little arrows, it will jump you straight to what's new there.

Where do the time stamps on private messages come from?
Posted by: TammyinTX - 08-01-2012, 01:09 PM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (3)

The time stamps on the two private messages I received this afternoon seem off Both indicate they were from 11 am-ish this morning, but both had to be sent in the p.m. as one was a response to a PM that I sent this afternoon and the other a PM to a post I made in the late afternoon.

So, are the time stamps originated from the sender's computer time or from the forum server or from somewhere else?

It's not intuitive to me as to how one would go about uploading a profile photo. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

  Reply to comment notification?
Posted by: KayPelham - 08-01-2012, 03:59 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (4)

I know that you can subscribe to a Forum and subscribe to a Thread, but is there a way to be notified if someone has replied to a particular comment on a thread? Someone could be replying to me, yet not have clicked reply to my comment, but simply added their comment to the bottom of the thread. With that, I only have the option to scroll through all comments and see if any are in reference to my particular comment. But you can click reply directly to a comment, which then will provide the quote of your comment, and I'm wondering if there is a notification available to let me know that someone has done that, so I can know in this case that someone is replying to my particular comment.

Did I use enough words there?

  subscriptions
Posted by: MaryEllen - 07-31-2012, 04:50 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (8)

I'm trying to work out the kinks in my forum subscriptions. Ideally, I would like to not get an email every time there is a new post in a forum I am subscribed to. I prefer to just click on Forum Subscriptions and see the activity there. In my settings I only see the No Email Notifications under the Thread Subscriptions. Am I missing something?

Information Mobile Users
Posted by: lklivingston - 07-29-2012, 02:06 PM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (5)

If you are viewing this forum on a mobile device, you have some additional options.

You may choose to use the web browser on your device to access the forum. All the features should then display and operate exactly as described in the forum documentation.

You may choose to use an app on your mobile device to access the forum. We have installed ForumRunner on the forum so that if you choose to purchase their app and install it on your device, you can see the forum in a more mobile-friendly view. ForumRunnner (is currently not working with the current version of MyBB) is available for Apple products as well as Android.

If you do purchase and install ForumRunner, you will need to search for Ambleside Online in their forum list and add it to your favorites.

Some forum features do not display in FR:
Announcements do not show up at all.
Stickies appear on a separate tab from other threads.
Colors, smilies, and other special formatting do not appear.
Automatic prefixes to subject lines (such as in the buy/sell forum) do not appear.
Closed threads are not designated.

Getting Started with the AO Forum
Posted by: AO Advisory - 07-29-2012, 03:50 AM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (3)

Welcome! We are glad you're here. As a new member of the AmblesideOnline Forum, you'll want to set up your account. These instructions assume you are viewing the forum through a web browser rather than a specifically mobile option. Here are a few places to go:

  • At the top right corner of the screen, click on Help to find out more about how this forum software works.
  • At the top right corner of the screen, click on Rules to find out more about how this specific forum will function.
  • In the bar at the top of the screen that starts out "Welcome back," you'll see a link to User CP. This is your User Control Panel (account settings) where you can add profile information and set options.
  • In the bar at the top of the screen, on the second line, you'll see convenient links to handy navigation aids such as a list of New Posts.
  • To see the list of all the subforums in a menu layout, click on "Ambleside Online Forums" underneath that bar at the top of the screen.

In User CP, you'll want to look around. The menu runs along the left side of the screen.
  • Edit Profile, and the options under it, allow you to change what information is displayed about you as well as some options like your password.
  • Edit Options, just below that, lets you specify how the forum will work for *you*. Pay attention to the Default Thread Subscription Mode (and perhaps experiment with this). You might try "Display posts in classic mode" both on and off to see which you like better.
  • "Subscribed Threads" and "Forum Subscriptions" allow you to see new posts for threads (and forums) to which you have subscribed. Use this feature judiciously so you are not overwhelmed.

Visit Welcome Center / Meet and Greet to introduce yourself and meet others before you venture into the rest of the forum. If you have teens, go to Tech Support to learn about registering them.

The AO forum has five main areas:
  • Welcome Center, which includes Announcements, Meet and Greet, and Tech Support.
  • AO Curriculum Help for questions about implementing AO, with resources and areas to discuss different age groups, family dynamics, and international locations.
  • CM Study Hall to learn more about Charlotte Mason's methods in different subject areas.
  • Private Groups. There are instructions on how to join these groups in the Tech Support area.
  • Amble Ramble - This is where you can "ramble" about anything you want to discuss, not necessarily related to AO and CM.

Come on in and make yourself at home!

  email digests?
Posted by: Lani - 07-29-2012, 03:05 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (5)

Are we supposed to be receiving multiple forum digests a day (or hour in my case today)?

I received one and started looking through thinking this could be helpful, but then had 3 more come in, in quick succession, each with one or two 'new' posts tacked onto the 300+ messages already included.

I would have thought it would only come once per day, no?

links back to threads in email not working today?
Posted by: Lani - 07-28-2012, 09:52 PM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (11)

Hi all. I love getting the email notices about threads in the forum. When I need/want to respond I click the link and viola. Was doing it last night. But now this morning every new message just says "not found" when I click. Is it something on my end? Or is it happening to anyone else? And only the links to here from emails.. others are working fine.

christo et doctrinae is locked out of the forum. She isn't able to log in--it told her that her password/username were wrong. She got a new password but it isn't working either, and now she has one more chance before her logon is locked.

If you have a TEEN, please read
Posted by: Phyllis - 07-23-2012, 09:32 PM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (1)

We invite your teenaged AO students to come join the student area of this forum. Only teens, the moderators of the teen area, and Advisory/Auxiliary will be able to participate in everything there; parents of teens will have read-only access to the general chat and will be able to post in the book discussions. No one else will be able to see that area and what your children are writing. We're really trying to keep it safe and private for them, so we ask that you would follow these steps to get them in.

Your student must be at least 13 to participate because of legalities with children and the internet.

If you want your teen to join:
1. Send an email to aoforum@amblesideonline.org with your username, your teen's birthdate, your teen's desired username and the email address you'd like to use for the teen's account (other teens can't see it). The teen's email address can be the same as yours or different.
2. Wait for an email with a temporary password, sent to the address you emailed from. He/she should reset that password to something personal and memorable and then join the fun!

UPDATE: If you don't hear from me in the day or two after you write to me, please look in spam folders. If you don't find anything, then please let me know. I'm usually really quick with this. It shouldn't take days and days to get into the teen forum. :)

  Editing registration settings
Posted by: Deborah - 07-20-2012, 04:58 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (25)

Is there a way to edit our personal settings that we made when we registered? I think I set up my account with not being able to view my email or to send me private emails and I was reconsidering that decision.

Thanks!
Deborah
