Volume 2 of (updated) “This Country of Ours: The Story of the United States”
Posted by: Donna-Jean - 06-24-2023, 09:42 PM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (31)

(Updated to add: Volume 2 is now available on Kindle.)

…(which covers chapters 29-63, and is used for AO’s Year 4) is now available at Amazon. It is in paperback and hardcover, with an inexpensive Kindle version to follow shortly.

Here is a description of this work: “Accurate tribal names, sources of quotes, and added information tether this story to the historical record while maintaining the literary excellence of the original.”

Volume 2 continues the same chapter numbers, out of respect for H. E. Marshall’s work and to keep the continuity of the series.

Volume 1 covers chapters 1-28 and is used for the end of Year 2 and all of Year 3. Volume 3 should be available by the end of 2023 (chapters 64-99), and a brand new volume covering the century that follows is also being planned.

(An added note: H. E. Marshall’s original work is still used for AmblesideOnline and the free version is linked to our website.)

I apologize if I missed this answer, but I haven't found it. Is there a way to do an ISO post? I searched the sell forum, and no one is currently selling it, but I thought I could ask if anyone had it. However, I wasn't sure if that was allowed or where to put it if it was allowed (It's ARTistic Pursuits 4-5 Book 1). Thanks!

How to see all posts on entire forum by date

Is there a way to do this? We were at the state hs convention these past few days, and I missed out on all the great conversations you've been having!

I know I can do "view new posts" but I've already done that once and didn't get to finish reading all of them, so of course now that I've been away from that page, those are no longer new, even though I haven't actually read them.

  how to delete a post?
Posted by: Rondalyno - 06-11-2023, 05:33 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (2)

I tried to edit a post and ended up with a duplicate post.

I have edited posts before, but there was no "edit" button. (I wanted to change something right after it was posted. It had not been posted more than a minute.)

In searching for a way to edit, I ended up at the original post, and changed what I wanted to change, and then posted. So now there is a duplicate post, with only a few words different. But still no edit button.

Here's the thread.

  Exams Before 2023 Changes
Posted by: lklivingston - 06-05-2023, 11:47 AM - Forum: Announcements - No Replies

The exams that are on the AO website right now (https://amblesideonline.org/exams) are the exams for the schedules that existed before the recent changes to the booklists and schedules.  Those changes affected every AO year.  The schedules and booklists on the AO website are all updated, but the exams are not.  This summer, the exams on the AO website will be updated to reflect the new schedules.  I saved the current exams to the Resources > Links and Downloads here, a thread for each year.  If you need them after they are removed from the website, they will remain available here.

If you have time to look through some of those threads, I'd appreciate some fresh eyes looking over them to be sure each thread includes all three terms and an answer key for the correct year.  They shouldn't have errors beyond having two copies of the same term or something like that.

Printing Issues with Y7 Lite PDF Schedule

Could an Admin fix how the Year 7 Lite Schedule PDF is set up to print. When I go to print it the second section for the weeks (page 4 I believe) has the header but then its blank otherwise, then the rest of the page is on a following page. The document isn't lined up correctly. Thank you! -Blair Lingbloom

  What You Can See
Posted by: lklivingston - 05-28-2023, 02:24 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (24)

I have been changing forum settings this morning so that people can see what areas exist in the forum even if they do not have access to reading the content in those areas.  This way, you'll know what you might want to request access to.  Also, people who visit the forum can see what types of content are there (by seeing the headings of the areas) before they decide whether or not they want to register.

It's entirely possible that some settings are not what they need to be, and some of you may see content for areas to which you haven't had access previously.  If that happens, please post here and give me some specifics about what you are seeing and how you are seeing it (is it in your View Today's Posts feed or can you go directly to the subforum and see it).  That will help me find the wrong settings.

Possible Error on Easter Hymn list
Posted by: KarenL - 05-08-2023, 11:44 PM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - No Replies

I noticed at Easter that the Easter hymn list has Hallelujah What a Savior listed as one of the hymns but the link goes to lyrics for Jesus What a Friend for Sinners. It’s a simple mistake since they both use the phrase “Hallelujah what a savior.” However. I believe these are the lyrics that should be listed for that title: https://library.timelesstruths.org/music..._a_Savior/

Here’s the link to the shortcut on the AO page.

Revitalized free on Kindle through tomorrow (Thursday)
Posted by: Donna-Jean - 04-06-2023, 12:04 PM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (10)

From now through tomorrow (Thursday), AO Advisory member Anne White’s book “Revitalized: A New Rendering of Charlotte Mason’s School Education” is available for ***free*** on Kindle. You don’t want to miss this book!

Each of the Advisory members has written books to help you with your educational pursuits. Leslie Laurio has paraphrases of all six of Charlotte Mason’s volumes - and they are available free on AO’s website and also in paperback on Amazon (she also has many other paraphrases); Karen Glass has written “Know and Tell,” “In Vital Harmony,” “Consider This,” “A Thinking Love,” and “Mind to Mind”; Anne White has Plutarch studies - free on AO’s website and also all in paperback, “Minds More Awake,” “Madam How and Lady Why” studies, “Ideas Freely Sown,” and her two “Ourselves” books (for Advent and Lent), and I have Audible versions of Karen’s “Consider This” and “In Vital Harmony,” as well as volume 1 of the “Annotated, Expanded, and Updated This Country of Ours” (with Volume 2 expected to be out in late June).

We hope you especially enjoy Anne’s “Revitalized”!

  Some Bible & Science Changes
Posted by: Donna-Jean - 04-03-2023, 11:49 AM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (37)

Here's what's new on AmblesideOnline's website:

We have filled out AmblesideOnline's Bible schedule for Years 1-12, updating it so that all of the AO Community (regular Years as well as Groups) is on the same schedule. You can see it (both the new and the old version) on the Bible subject page of our website. We are very excited to have this long-standing project completed!

We've also made a change with Year 5 (& 6...&7...&9...&10!). We've replaced "Christian Liberty Nature Reader 5" with Jeannie Fulbright and Dr. Brooke Ryan's "Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology." This book will be used for both Year 5 and Year 6.

So what will be moved from Year 6 to make room? It was always our intent to use Rachel Carson's "The Sea Around Us - Young Reader's Edition." But since that version is out of print and no longer readily available, we are moving (the regular version of) "The Sea Around Us" to be divided between Years 9 & 10, where we think it will be a better fit.

And what happens with students (now entering year 7, 8, or 9) who have already read "The Sea Around Us" for their Year 6? For those students, one good option is Rachel Carson's "Under the Sea Wind."

Be sure to check out our new Science subject page, which explains AO's science choices in the light of Charlotte Mason's educational practice and philosophy.

As always, know that we on the AO Advisory are praying for you and yours as you plan for the coming year, and we are sending along some virtual "jam to go with it"!

(Edited to add: Two things -
1) We've not put Bible on a rotation like Art, Music, Folk Songs, and Hymns. "On the same schedule" means, for example, all Year 6 students (regular Years as well as Groups) do the same thing. We also filled in our Bible schedule, which was a project that had not been completed. If you wish to have your family/students all doing the same Bible schedule, pick a year to do together. Our overall Charlotte Mason-based plan for Bible for AO students is on the drop-down page on our Subject section of the website.

2)  The schedule for the Christian Liberty Nature Reader 5 will still be found on our website in the footnotes (for those who need it), as well as a schedule for Rachel Carson's "Under the Sea Wind" for year 6. (If it's not there yet, it should be later today or tomorrow.)

I hope that helps clear things up!

We’ve Made Some Changes To Parts of Years 7-12!
Posted by: Donna-Jean - 03-28-2023, 07:06 AM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (98)

- to “Spiritual Formation” and “Citizenship” -

Why are we doing this?

The world has changed in just a few years, and so many issues have evolved. As a result, some of our worldview books are no longer current. They were dealing with issues that mattered eight years ago, but the world is rapidly changing and we want AmblesideOnline students to be prepared for the world that's out there right now (rather than fifteen years ago) and ready to live in that world.

This is for Years 7-12.

We've changed the titles: "Devotional" is now "Spiritual Formation" (and "Bible" is now a separate category), and "Worldview" is now "Citizenship."

For the “Spiritual Formation” books, we have added some inspirational missionary biographies. We've also increased the impact of the other books by highlighting just one or two per year. We have added one current book that's written by a contemporary (Jackie Hill Perry) yet is still doctrinally sound. Thus, AO's position hasn't changed, we've merely found a new voice to add to our timeless classic books.

"Citizenship" includes Ourselves, Plutarch, Worldview, Government and Economics, and Current Events. You can find all of those subjects in this category.

A few more important notes:
-Some of the books on the now “old” list in these categories are still included in the “new” list as “optional” or as “free reads” in other years.
-For those of you who wish to still use the old booklists and schedules, they will remain available on our website through the 2023-2024 school year.
-And Always, Always, ALWAYS, be sure to check our Footnotes.

Thank you!

  The Advisory
Posted by: Donna-Jean - 03-22-2023, 09:55 AM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (20)

For a few days in Dallas, the Advisory of AmblesideOnline met together in person. Our work takes place daily online as it has for decades, but sometimes the Lord makes a way for us to spend time face to face. We treasure every moment.

The last gathering was four years ago - when there were six of us. We miss Wendi Capehart and Lynn Bruce every single day- and no one will replace them. Our love for them - and theirs for us - stays with us.

The Lord continues to give us joy, strength, and vision for this life-work that we love. We are so grateful. We ask your continued prayers for us as we carry on - that we would hear His voice, follow His path, and sense His presence.
“Great is Thy faithfulness…
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.”

With strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Donna-Jean Breckenridge
Karen Glass
