The last few hours before the annual shutdown are traditionally the AO Christmas Party where you can chat about all things festive. Say Merry Christmas to your friends. Tell us what you're eating for Christmas and what you're planning to give the kids. Say thank you to the Moderators for a job well done, and profess your undying gratitude to the wonderful Advisory. Tell us what you're planning to read and share your family's special traditions and pastimes. Let's make the next few hours fun and go out with a BANG!

Dear Ambleside Online members,
This is a VERY important announcement, so please read!
The AO forum and email list will take a restful Holiday Break beginning on Friday, Dec 20. We'll re-open the forum and email list again on Charlotte Mason's birthday, Wednesday, January 1. The forum will be closed to posting. Any messages sent to the email list during the break will not post, and will not be held in a queue to post when we go active again on January 1.
The CM method is about more than homeschooling; it's about life and relationships. We would like our AO family of members, moderators, Auxiliary and Advisory to step back from lessons and computers, and take time to savor the holidays with their loved ones.
For the benefit of anyone who might be starting homeschool for the first time right after the holidays, and those who have some other immediate need in order to begin their January term, the Question and Answer subforum will remain open. We ask that this venue be used during the break only for this purpose.
Should you need AO information during the break, existing threads will remain available here at the forum and the Yahoogroup, and of course the AO website will remain up and running.
We encourage you all to explore AO's special Holiday pages during the break!
The Advisory's Favorite Holiday Stories & Poems:

Holiday Carols and favorite CDs:

May you find time to reflect on the meaning of Christmas, enjoy time with those you love, and be refreshed as you anticipate the coming year.
We wish you a Merry Christmas!

I have been trying for some time to post FS listings. I see that I can leave a post here apparently but when I click on "new thread" over there, a screen comes up telling me I am not allowed there. I would be grateful to know how to post all of these FS listings I have building up! Thank you very much.

For the past few weeks, I have been unable to post or reply. I was just wondering the reason for this. As far as I am aware, I have not had any trouble with any one or anything. I am really mostly a lurker but when I do have a question, I can't get an answer because of this. Can anyone help? Thank you for your time.

Please Read: Regarding Ambleside Online's Copyright Policy |

For those who don't know, AO has always been copyrighted, even before we were AO. We've had a licensing agreement on our site since Oct 2002.
We've been lax about enforcement because we don't like to be bad guys, and we hoped the licensing agreement on the site would speak for itself so we didn't have to. However, an increasing number of people seem to have interpreted "free for using" as free for taking, reposting, and sometimes reselling (either directly, or by copying and pasting from our site, but stripping out our affiliate links and replacing them with their own), or copying and pasting our work to their websites, and then, ironically, copyrighting those pages to themselves, even though they just violated our copyright.
We don't really like confrontations of this nature, so even when we have encountered blatant copyright violations, we've hardly ever asked people to take them down. The few times we have asked, we've been told, "But look here, here, and here, they are in violation of your copyrights and you seem to have let them go . . ." So our generosity has been misunderstood and taken for license.
Related to this, links are not the largest issue, but please do consider that when you copy and paste from our website to yours, replacing our affiliate links on our booklists with your own, that you are hindering AO's ability to pay for itself - and the Advisory ourselves did not even add affiliate links until about 2 years ago, paying for everything for the first dozen years or so out of our own pockets. What we have always envisioned is that our work is like a CM potluck - we prepared the main dishes, set up the location and hosted a giant picnic, inviting the community to join us, free of charge, and to pitch in as they are able, adding to the collective effort. We hate to sound whiny, but it is frustrating, and even hurtful, to see others copyrighting our work, or attempting to profit from it, when we have sacrificed so much to create it.
It's becoming a problem, and we really need to Mom up and face our reluctance to confront people about violations of our licensing agreement. We need to be forthright about protecting our work, but we'd still prefer to do this as gently as possible. So we're asking here first - could you all please take a look at your own blogs and websites and see - did you copy and paste from material on our site that is *not* in the pubic domain? PR magazine articles are in the public domain, as are the original CM volumes. However, the CM volumes you see on our website have been edited, footnoted, and annotated by us, and our words and work are not in the public domain.
Some websites have copied and pasted so much of our material that people are confusing those websites for AO.
It's creating quite a few headaches for us, and almost nobody out there who has copied and pasted from our material *has* asked us for permission, and many seem not to even be aware there has always been a licensing agreement - the first versions were sent to our email list in 1999, 2000 and 2001, and appeared on the website at least as early as 2002.
We love for you to talk about the curriculum, to link to it, and to explain to your readers how you've made it your own - but that does not require copying and pasting huge chunks of our work. Fair use generally allows about 300 words to be reproduced for the purpose of review. Could you please review your public writings outside the forum and if you've violated our TOS, please, please take those down without waiting for us to ask? Thank you so much.

Suggestions for email support |

The AO email list has in the past couple of days seen a renewal of interest as people realized that there are quite a lot of us who really do not like the forums for various reasons and thus aren't getting the support we need to continue with AO or even a CM education. Kathy Livingston has been helpful in making suggestions, and suggested that the ideas for improvement belonged here. Because I don't access the forums, I am just copying and pasting my email here in hopes that maybe it will help those who need email support, where the forums just aren't working for them:
---------------------------------
>Unless you were reading every post on the AO list, HEO, AmbleRamble, and
Year 0 (as well as the FB page), you were not getting everything before the
change. You just didn't realize it because you didn't see what you were
missing.
Maybe I'm the unusual one, but I was subscribed to AO, HEO, AmbleRamble (but not year 0)
and was on the FB page while it was there. I didn't read every post on the FB page (because
it's a quick type of communication meaning it's *really* active, indeed, too active to keep up on
fully for one individual), but most of the time I did skim all the emails that came through my inbox.
I only read in depth the ones that were of interest to me or caught my eye for some other reason,
but usually everything got at least a cursory glance, which is how you catch those I-didn't-even-know-I-needed-this
posts and discussions. : )
>get the email for the new thread, it includes the first part of the first
post, as well as the post title, so I have an idea if I care or not.
If it has an excerpt of the first post, then why not the whole first post, with separate emails
for each new post in the thread (with the full text)? I know it's possible because I did some
looking today at forums with full email integration. Then the email folks could get
the full benefit of the forums in a format that's more convenient. Even if we had to go to the forums
to post a new thread or reply, being able to read via email would be awesome!
>find a niche, you can get comfortable in the community, and then when you
have time check out the New Posts area to see what posts are coming through
elsewhere--it shows the title and some of the text of the latest post.
When you click on the "View New Posts," is there a way to see the text of the latest post
without hovering, like an automatic way to have that expanded without having to hover over
each post? Perhaps I have slow internet or something, but hovering to read even a text excerpt
takes a lot of time (unless you go directly from one to the next down the line... even a slight skip makes
a significant pause for the text to pop up).
---------------------------------
So, I know full email integration IS possible. There are forums online that are doing it, meaning that a person can basically subscribe to a whole forum (for example, to the Form III forum) and get all the posts and whole threads emailed to them, so they receive all the stuff in their inbox and don't have to go to the forum.
I'd love to see this happen with AO. That way the forums could stay as they are, and people who like the forums could still come to the website and use the forums in the traditional way, but those who have been left behind (and there are a lot of them!) would be able to use email pretty much they way they have been on the Yahoo Groups list.

Hi, this browser saved my login for now. But I tried to access the forum from another browser. I don't remember the password and when I typed in the email address it said that I was not registered. But then when I tried to reregister with my username it said that the name was taken.
Any help would be appreciated
