Looking for the learning disability/dyslexia forum!
Posted by: elizabeth.rs - 11-19-2022, 02:26 PM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (3)

Hello! I saw on the AO Facebook group that there is a section of the forum devoted to families schooling with learning differences, specifically dyslexia. I am doing a bit of research and looking for insight on whether I should get my daughter assessed/evaluated. Can someone please direct me there?

Thank you so much!

  Current Events page issues
Posted by: tank06 - 11-11-2022, 03:10 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - No Replies

Found some broken links and links that go to unrelated pages on the Current Events Page at https://www.amblesideonline.org/current-events

>World Magazine page link will not load http://www.worldmag.com/ (the podcast link loads fine) Since the podcast load, might be a temporary issue.

>Student News Daily - loads fine, but has no activity since 9/2021

> The World and I https://www.worldandi.com/ goes to a hiking site

I didn't check all of them, but just the ones I looked that had issues.

  Master Booklist
Posted by: Rhetorical - 11-08-2022, 06:51 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (6)

Is the master booklist up-to-date?  I'm looking at Y7 and I don't see Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English people?  I usually use the master list for purchasing, but should I go off the schedule instead?

Thanks!

  Copying Plutarch lessons
Posted by: busyncmama - 10-28-2022, 02:18 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (3)

In the past I have been cutting and pasting Plutarch lessons into an Open Office document to print out for our studies. Today, when I tried to cut & paste the next two lessons, I couldn't get them to paste. I am wondering if something was changed on the website to prevent it, or if the problem is on my end. I was able to copy them directly from the website, which I didn't realize before that I could do, but I can't reformat that way. Thanks.

  Save threads?

Is there a way to save links to threads?
Sometimes I comment just so I can come back to it by going to the threads I participated in.
Some of you ladies throw out thread links like wizards and I’m wondering how you find them so easily(or save them).
I usually use Tapatalk on my iPad.
Thank you!

“Raising Patriotic Kids: US History Through Holidays”
Posted by: Donna-Jean - 09-07-2022, 11:00 PM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (3)

“Charlotte Mason spoke of a "rational, well-considered patriotism," that was informed by the reading of history. History and patriotism are linked - and one way that parents can connect the two is through a commemoration of American holidays.” That’s the start of my updated article on “Raising Patriotic Kids: US History Through Holidays.” It’s on our website, and it’s there to help you with some resources (books, poems, copywork) for American holidays.

  A Tribute to Wendi Capehart
Posted by: Donna-Jean - 09-01-2022, 06:58 PM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (2)

It’s been seven months since Wendi Capehart left this earth for heaven, and our missing her has not changed. In this episode of Cindy Ward Rollins’ “The New Mason Jar,” some of us who knew and loved her remember the magnanimous, brilliant, and remarkable woman she was. If you use any part of AmblesideOnline, your life has been blessed by Wendi.

  Subjects List on Website Suggestion
Posted by: amanda47 - 08-21-2022, 01:10 PM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (2)

I recently asked on the FB group why history and science aren't listed under the "subjects area" on the website while they are listed as subjects on the 36-week schedules and the "by year" page overviews. It was mentioned there that I post here with any suggestions for the website that I might have.

Specifically, I was looking for a scope and sequence and some overview guidance/philosopy for these two subject areas similar to what is on the Language Arts Page.

In regards to history, I was given links to two different FAQ pages by different people. These pages included EXACTLY what I was looking for, and I don't think I would have found them on my own. Further, with only nature study as a subject, it gives the impression that this IS science rather than a PART of science.

So, I wonder if it would be benefical for this very helpful info that is hidden on the FAQ pages (specifically scope, sequence, guiding principles or AO approach) to  be highlighted on its own subject page. Further, brief intro/explainations to the items listed in "Basic Overiew" on the "By Year" such as Book of Centuries and Timeline would also be helpful.

Links I was given:

  Patio Chats for 2022-2023!
Posted by: LeslieNoelani - 07-27-2022, 11:14 AM - Forum: Announcements - No Replies

AO's Patio Chats are here for another year!

These weekly snippets provide a gentle, affirming introduction to the Charlotte Mason method over the course of the year with brief, informal explanations of Charlotte Mason distinctives, many taken from her 20 Principles.

This week and next, PRE-Patio Chats will be sent for the benefit of those just beginning to homeschool for the very first time -- five Chats to provide five steps to prepare for the new school year.

On August 8, the "real" Patio Chats will begin. If you're already part of the AO Forum or AO's MeWe group, you don't need to do a thing -- they'll be posted there every Monday. Otherwise, you can sign up to receive these little chats via email.

  Problems searching the AO site
Posted by: Barb Gifford - 06-25-2022, 07:15 AM - Forum: Tech Support (Parent and Student Access) - Replies (47)

search function is not working. I have a Mac (12.3.1) and tried the search with Safari, Firefox and Chrome. I tested with the word Washington and nothing comes up.

I get a long list on my 1st gen, ancient iPad and I have no theories on why it doesn't work on the laptop.
Edit: now it's not working on the iPad. It can't find the word Washington again. <sigh>

A New Version of This Country of Ours - Volume 1
Posted by: Donna-Jean - 06-24-2022, 11:08 AM - Forum: Announcements - Replies (38)

On AmblesideOnline's website, we say that "This Country of Ours is a classic work for which we have found no equal, and it is an important spine in the AO curriculum." We stand by that statement, and we recommend the book for the very end of Year 2, and for all of Years 3, 4, and 5.

H. E. Marshall's book was published in the United States in 1917, and it therefore has certain terms and expressions that are no longer in usage today. Over the years, I've wanted to update the book, to add some notes and helps that would enhance the reading for a new generation.

That project is part-way done. I have completed Volume 1, which is chapters 1-28, in an "Annotated, Expanded, and Updated" version. Here are a few of the things that are added or adjusted in this version:

-the sources of Marshall's many quotes are listed, as accurately as possible.
-the removal of outdated or color-based terms for Native people, replacing them with the tribal name wherever possible.
-a change in terms that are now considered offensive (such as the term for a Native woman).
-new information that is pertinent (such as links to Viking discoveries, or how the Spotswood Peace Treaty continues to this day).
-a Pronunciation Guide for names of people or tribes, and definitions of some words that are not easily understood in the context.
-in some places, a few sentences or paragraphs that add more to the story, where it's helpful.
-enhanced punctuation, to make read-aloud easier.
-a switch to American spellings, rather than British spellings.

All notes are at the end of each chapter, so as not to disrupt the reading. (One additional change: the title of chapter 17 has been changed to "A Year to be Remembered, and the Peace of Pocahontas Ends.")

In the process of this project, I have been impressed once again by Marshall's passion for the truth, by her fairness, and by her gift of writing. The story of America is compelling, and she has done a worthy job of telling it. This version seeks to follow in her footsteps.

This version is now available in paperback, hardcover, and in an inexpensive Kindle version. Volume 2 will be available in a few months, with the third volume completed in a similar time period. Volume 4 will be original material, taking the story beyond 1917, for term 1 of year 6.

Charlotte Mason wrote, "It is never too late to mend but we may not delay to offer such a liberal and generous diet of History to every child in the country as to give weight to his decisions, consideration to his actions and stability to his conduct; that stability, the lack of which has plunged us into many a stormy sea of unrest."

In this stormy sea of unrest, here is a new look at "This Country of Ours."

(Please know that anyone can still use the original version of TCOO, and the free version online! But if you want the updated version, it is available on Amazon

If you emailed aoforum@amblesideonline.org and didn't get a response, please email again. Our responses are being blocked by gmail and some other email providers. Now that I know that, I can respond through a different account until we reolve the problem. I just sent out responses to everyone I emailed over the last month, hoping to catch most of the failed messages.
