Form 3 First Year: Part 1
Part 1, "The Dimensions of Reading," breaking them up as you like but spacing them out across the year. In this section, Adler describes three types of reading: "structural", "interpretative", and "critical." He also describes the first two levels of reading "Elementary" and "Inspectional" reading. Many Year 7 students (and even parents) find this terminology somewhat bewildering. However, if one keeps Adler's basic purposes in mind (figuring out what kind of a book you are looking at, and then paying attention to what the author is saying) over the first four chapters, he will then be rewarded with Chapter Five, "How to Be a Demanding Reader," which we think would have pleased Charlotte Mason very much.

Form 3 Second Year: Part 2
This year's readings focus on "The Third Level of Reading: Analytical Reading," which teaches students how to "pigeonhole" and then "x-ray" a book. The readings for this year can be thought of as the "rules of grammar" for getting the most out of a single book; next year's readings will apply the rules to a variety of subjects such as philosophy. One of the most interesting and challenging parts of this year's work is Chapter 10, "Criticizing a Book Fairly." The last chapter in this year's work, "Aids to Reading," discusses resources such as encyclopedias, which will of course need to be brought into the present day (but which can be an interesting history lesson!)
